Gordon Brown steps in revive Kirkby regeneration proposals

Commenting on reports in the Liverpool Daily Post that the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, is determined that Kirkby will be regenerated, George said it was "too early to say" whether the rescue plan could succeed. But "it's very encouraging that [Minister for the North West], Phil Woolas, with the blessing of the Prime Minister, is engaging with Knowsley Council, Tesco and others to see what can be done."

Child trust funds - make sure your child benefit

The Government introduced child trust funds in 2005. They guarantee access for your child to a lump sum when he or she turns 18. Already 6, 046 vouchers have been issued in Knowsley North and Sefton East. Make sure you make the most of this opportunity and visit www.childtrustfund.gov.uk - the Tories have promised to scrap this if they get elected, but Labour will protect it.

George Howarth MP today added his support to Carers UK’s national carers’ rights campaign on Friday 4th December 2009.
There are over six million unpaid carers in the UK who provide care and support to family, friends and neighbours, providing unpaid care worth an estimated £87 billion each year. Read the press release here.

George expresses disappointment following the Kirkby regeneration decision

Commenting on the Secretary of State's announcement about the regeneration of Kirkby town centre George said:
"I deeply regret this decision. In a time of significant economic challenges, it is disappointing that Kirkby will be unable to take advantage of the regeneration opportunities offered by this proposal. We all now need to go back to the drawing board to work out an alternative solution to bring much needed regeneration to Kirkby. I remain determined to ensure Kirkby gets the investment that it so urgently needs."

George hosts business summit with Eddie O'Hara and Knowsley Council

Working with local business representatives including Knowlsey's Chamber of Commerce and the Federation of Small Businesses, George played a key role hosting a summit of local business leaders to identify actions that can help local business through the economic downturn. Poor law report still holds lessons

Writing as a co-signatory in the Guardian on the anniversary of Beatrice Webb's report on the poor law, George says "we have a collective duty to ensure a basic minimum for all; that charity, while important, can never guarantee this on its own; and that tackling poverty must both support individual efforts and address the wider social and economic causes, not retreat to simply blaming the poor for their own poverty".
